FAQs

Applications are only possible for the next academic year (beginning in the winter semester). The application deadline is the end of January. This means that if you want to go abroad in winter semester 25/26 or summer semester 26, for example, you must apply by the end of January 2025. For information on applying for remaining places, see below.

You will have the opportunity to study abroad for 3 to 12 months.

  • You receive a mobility grant and do not have to pay tuition fees at the host university.
  • You can improve your foreign language skills; at the host university you usually receive a free intensive language course at the beginning.
  • You can also get to know other mentalities and make new friends.
  • The Digital Learning Agreement approved by the Student Advisory Service usually ensures that the ECTS points earned at the host university are recognized.

The International Office (INTL) regularly organizes information events on studying abroad. There is a lot of information about Erasmus and other programs (e.g. BaWü, DAAD, etc.).

Please contact the International Students Office directly for the exact dates.

In order to participate in the Erasmus+ program, you must be enrolled in a regular degree program at KIT and have successfully completed at least four semesters of study. In addition, you must have a sufficient command of the lecture language in the host country to be able to participate meaningfully in the lectures, i.e. at least at level B1. Further information is also available from the IStO.

You can spend either one semester or two semesters abroad. Please note that a two-semester stay abroad can only be started in the winter semester.

The (Digital) Learning Agreement lists the lectures you would like to attend at the partner university. These lectures are determined by you before your stay abroad and approved by your academic advisor and later also by the person responsible at the partner university. With the signature of your academic advisor, you receive the guarantee that the ECTS points earned abroad will be recognized here in Karlsruhe (see "How does credit transfer work..." below).

Recognition is usually granted as an elective module. Recognition as a compulsory module with a grade can only be granted through an individual assessment of the individual examination performance by a professor from our faculty who offers a comparable course. If you are seeking recognition as a compulsory module with a grade, you should clarify this with the relevant lecturers before starting your stay abroad.

If the lectures you have chosen do not take place or you discover another lecture on site that you would like to attend, you can of course change the Learning Agreement. However, you will again need a signature from the Student Advisory Service to guarantee recognition of the new subjects.

The "Recognition at the Sending Institution" table contains the lectures that are to be replaced by the credits earned abroad. As these are normally only lectures from the elective area for which no 1:1 equivalence to local lectures is required, you can simply enter "Elective area" in the table.

If you are studying for a Bachelor's degree, you can go to any academic advisor. However, it is advisable to choose the one that is closest to your planned field of study. You can find an overview of the subject advisors on the department homepage.

In principle, we expect you to complete approx. 30 ECTS per semester. In order to receive guaranteed funding, you must complete at least 20 ECTS. If you are confronted with problems regarding the number of ECTS during your stay abroad, please notify the IStO immediately.

The main criterion for nomination is your grade point average (in your Bachelor's and, if applicable, Master's degree), taking into account your academic progress. Language skills in the language of the country and the lecture language are also taken into account.

In addition to your first choice, you have the option of specifying up to two further universities of your choice in the online application. When applying, you only need to submit all the required documents for your first choice. For the other universities, we will request the missing documents (e.g. Learning Agreement) if necessary.

Only existing language skills are taken into account for the ranking. In most cases, the language level of the lecture language required for the stay must be achieved by the beginning of the stay. You can therefore take language courses in the semester before your stay in order to acquire or refresh the necessary language skills. However, some partner universities require proof of sufficient language skills at the time of application (beginning of March). Please contact your partner university in good time to find out about such requirements

As a rule, the partner universities expect foreign language skills at level B2 for English-speaking and Scandinavian countries and B1 for the other countries before the start of the stay abroad.

We accept a school leaving certificate as proof of language proficiency for level B2 if it shows that the relevant language has been studied for at least three years. The average grade across year groups and Abitur examination must not be less than 10 points. We also accept the usual language tests (e.g. TOEFEL) and certificates from the Language Center's language courses.

Since the changeover to Erasmus+, you can complete a stay abroad in both the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.

Not all credits earned abroad have to be recognized. However, crediting is generally only possible to the extent provided for in the examination regulations and your individual study plan. This must be clarified with your academic advisor.
As a rule, recognition is given as an elective module and either with or without a grade. ATTENTION: Since winter semester 2020/21, recognition is only possible with a grade. Recognition as a compulsory module with a grade can only be granted through an individual assessment of the individual examination performance by a professor from our faculty who offers a comparable lecture. If you are seeking recognition as a compulsory module with a grade, you should clarify this with the relevant professors before starting your stay abroad.
For credit transfer, you must go to the relevant examination board in the semester following your stay abroad, obtain credit transfer forms and have them signed by the responsible academic advisor or professor.

Remaining places for the summer semester are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The same minimum requirements apply. Please submit your complete application documents by 28.07.2024 at the latest. Please note that there is no mobility allowance for remaining places.

No. You will only receive Erasmus status (zero-grant student), i.e. you will receive all the benefits of the program (e.g. tuition fee waiver, simplified application...), but NO mobility grant.
