Specialization 6: Electrical Drives and Power Electronics
In a nutshell
Power electronics and electric drive technology are essential key technologies for the future energy supply and electromobility. All renewable energy sources or battery storage systems are integrated into the electrical grid via power electronics. Together with electrical machines, power electronics form the basis for efficient drive systems in mobile and industrial applications.
Fields of Application
Electric drive technology and power electronics are used in numerous fields of application:
- Renewable energies (photovoltaics, wind),
- electromobility (drives, charging stations),
- energy distribution (HVDC),
- energy storage (batteries),
- Energy conversion (Power-to-X, electrolysis, fuel cells),
- industrial drives.
Digitalization is also becoming increasingly important in all applications. Topics such as condition monitoring and preventive maintenance to increase availability and the integration of systems into cloud-based services are becoming increasingly important.
Graduates of specialization 6 are qualified to work in research and development, but also in project management, product management, technical sales, project planning, production or commissioning. The demand for drive engineers and power electronics experts is very high, especially in the course of the "electrification" of many classic fields of application, e.g. in the automotive industry. Potential employers can be found in the electrical engineering industry, at car manufacturers and suppliers, in energy supply companies as well as in engineering offices and research institutes. The particular appeal of this major lies in the combination of classical areas of electrical engineering with information technology. Graduates are given the knowledge to be able to contribute to innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for the future areas of mobility, energy and production.
Contents and Background
The safe, economical and environmentally friendly use of energy is one of the key challenges of the coming years. Electrical energy plays a special role here, as it is the optimal form of energy that can be transmitted, stored and controlled for almost all important applications. Mobility solutions, charging infrastructures, renewable energies, energy storage, data centers - electric drives and power electronics are key technologies for converting electrical energy everywhere. The use of powerful signal processing systems results in intelligent products and system solutions for electric vehicles and trains, electric aircraft and ships, wind and solar power plants, battery storage, high-voltage direct current transmissions, but also for robots and many other industrial applications. The knowledge required for the planning, development and application of these technologies is taught in the Electrical Drives and Power Electronics specialization. Comprehensive system skills play an important role in the efficient and reliable design of complex systems.
The combination of the basic training in the Bachelor's degree course with the lectures and practical courses in the Electrical Drives and Power Electronics specialization will enable you to familiarize yourself quickly and successfully with this interdisciplinary subject. When compiling the modules in the elective area, you can decide for yourself where you want to deepen your knowledge or familiarize yourself with additional subject areas. Basic knowledge in the areas of management and business administration will round off your profile.
