Double Master Grenoble - FAQ

FAQ

On this page we have tried to compile and answer the most frequently asked questions. However, if anything remains unclear, please contact Professor Zwick directly.

What are the variants all about?

We offer KIT students two different variants of the double degree program. You must choose one of these options when you apply.

When do I have to apply?

Students are selected at the end of January for the following winter semester. The application deadline is therefore usually January 15 (in exceptional cases, the deadline may be extended). Interested students should come to an interview with Professor Zwick as early as possible.

Does participation in the Dual Master's program extend my studies?

No, if you choose option D1. The special feature of the Dual Master's program is that the national standard period of study can be adhered to. However, if you choose option D2, your studies will be extended by one semester.

Which specializations are possible?

French students who come to Karlsruhe can choose any of the Master's programs offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
During their first year of study in Grenoble (B5/B6), German students follow the compulsory Phelma curriculum. From the seventh semester (M1), they can choose a so-called Filière. This corresponds roughly to the German specializations, with the difference that there is a binding curriculum for each filière. To ensure a smooth course of study that meets the expectations, interests and inclinations of the student, the choice of specialization should be discussed with the program coordinator before the stay abroad. D2 students can choose a specialization from the first semester abroad, as they will be integrated into the second year of study in Grenoble.

Is it possible to study a model that is not covered by Phelma?

Certain models are not covered by the Filières or certain specializations, such as energy technology, are not offered by Phelma at all. Interested students should nevertheless contact Professor Zwick. Here, too, it is possible to choose a specialization at KIT and Filière in such a way that they complement each other well.

How many places are available each year?

Five students are admitted each year in Karlsruhe and Grenoble.

Are additional tuition fees charged?

No, tuition fees are only charged at the home university during the entire program and especially during the study abroad phase.

Are scholarships awarded for the program?

The program is funded by the Franco-German University. This currently amounts to €300 per month. Students can also apply for ERASMUS+ funding.

How does the Bachelor's thesis work?

German students are in Grenoble during the Bachelor's thesis period (B6). As the French course does not provide for a Bachelor's thesis, this is an additional requirement for German students in B6. However, all French students are required to complete an internship in industry between their first and second year of study. This internship can be replaced by the Bachelor's thesis. It can be written in German or English and is assessed by KIT. The presentation takes place at KIT.

When is the Bachelor awarded?

The German Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in Karlsruhe as soon as the faculty receives the transcript of records issued in Grenoble, which certifies the successful completion of B5 and B6, and the Bachelor's thesis has been accepted and assessed.

How do I continue my studies in Karlsruhe?

KIT students return to Karlsruhe for the 9th semester (D1) or 10th semester (D2) and continue their studies in the Master's program. They automatically study the "International Study Model". This enables them to study subjects at KIT that are optimally suited to their chosen field of study. In this case, we recommend Professor Zwick as a model advisor.

How does the Master's thesis work?

The Master's thesis is written at the end of the program at KIT. This is supervised both at KIT and at Phelma. To make this possible, the thesis must be written in English. The final presentation must be given at least at KIT. If the supervisor at Phelma so wishes, the presentation must also be given in Grenoble. In most cases, an online presentation is also possible.

Which specialization will appear on my Master's certificate?

All students of the double Master's program study the "International Study Model" at KIT. However, as this makes no statement about their specialization, the translation of the Filière chosen in Grenoble will appear on the Master's certificate.

Where and when does the industrial placement take place?

The Grenoble INP Phelma requires an industrial placement after the second year of study in Grenoble (D1) or after the first year of study in Grenoble (D2). This is also compulsory for all KIT students. Following the internship, a report must be submitted to Phelma and a presentation must be given.

Are foreign students allowed to participate in the Dual Master's program?

The application and admission to the Dual Master Program is independent of the nationality of the applicants. We explicitly encourage international students to apply for the Dual Master's program. However, it may be necessary for international students to apply for a visa for France.

What is the required grade point average?

There is no fixed average grade required. In the interests of the students themselves, candidates are only admitted if they have shown in their previous studies that they are suitable for the subject. In particular, the following important prerequisite for the program must be observed: all examinations scheduled for the first 4 semesters of the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology degree program must be passed within the 4 semesters (D1). This means that only applicants who have a very high probability of achieving the above can be admitted. Equally important is the personal motivation of the applicants. For this reason, the letter of motivation should be written with particular attention so that it is clear what ideas and personal goals the applicants associate with the program.

Is there any language preparation?

In Karlsruhe, there are numerous opportunities to prepare for your stay abroad in France. In addition to the courses offered by the Language Center, some of which specifically prepare students for studying abroad, the KIT DeFI also offers various courses in cooperation with the Centre Culturel Franco-Allemand in Karlsruhe. In addition, interested applicants, like all other students, can take part in a tandem language exchange or get in touch with international students via the International Office (INTL).

Do I have to provide proof of language proficiency for students from other universities?

In contrast to the DSH exam, which is compulsory for all foreign students seeking a German degree, there is no compulsory exam for German students in Grenoble. For French students, the DSH exam takes place in March after their arrival in Karlsruhe.

Is it possible to do a doctorate?

Both the Master of Science from KIT and the French Diplôme d'ingénieur entitle students to a doctorate. In the past, it was not uncommon for a graduate with a double degree to do a doctorate in a neighboring country.

Do I have to find my own room?

Finding a room in Grenoble is just as difficult as in Karlsruhe, although the prices are significantly higher than usual. Unfortunately, Phelma and KIT cannot arrange rooms, but information about the respective contact points can be obtained from the program representatives or the KIT DeFI. However, students have the opportunity to apply for a place in a hall of residence abroad.
